😍 Summer berries - delicious little fruits

Berries - find out which ones are the stars, how healthy they are, what they pair well with and how you can buy, store and freeze them.
Raspberries - the stars of summer
Raspberries are not only cute, but also super tasty and sweet! Botanically speaking, they are not real berries but are related to roses and are aggregates of drupelets. They are full of iron and vitamin C - 100 grams cover around a quarter of your daily requirement. Best of all, they are super low in calories with just 34 kcal per 100 grams! Perfect as a sweet treat. Whether in muesli, yoghurt, quark, tiramisu, on cakes, in smoothies or even in salads - raspberries go super well everywhere and harmonize perfectly with rocket, asparagus and poultry.
Blackberries - a real little superfood
Blackberries look really elegant with their shiny blue-black surface! But be careful: botanically they are not real berries, but aggregates of drupelets. But they are definitely healthy! Did you know that they can inhibit bacteria, viruses and fungi as well as relieve inflammation? They also contain more vitamin C than apples and are low in calories and fat - as well as being perfect for the skin thanks to the vitamin E they contain! Blackberries are great in ice cream, parfait and cream, but also in quark, yoghurt, cocktails and iced tea. Try them in smoothies, cakes or as jelly, juice and jam. They add a wonderfully sweet touch to salads when used as a vinegar or on their own. Our insider tip? Blackberries on tarte flambée with thyme and honey mustard - simply divine!
Blueberries - true all-rounders
The velvety-soft, shimmering blue blueberries look simply divine! They taste slightly sweet and contain lots of tannins and fiber. Did you know that they contain anthocyanin? This is a natural pigment that neutralizes free radicals and makes blood vessels more elastic. Amazing, isn't it? The little berries are real all-rounders! Whether in muesli, whipped cream, waffles, pancakes or muffins - they make everything better! They are also a hit in yogurt or quark, as juice, jelly or jam. Blueberries even go well with salads and can be used to refine sauces and marinades for poultry or game. Just give them a try!
Currants - with plenty of acidic power
The grape-shaped berries in red, white or black are simply an eye-catcher! Currants have the highest acid content of all berry varieties - the red ones in particular are bursting with acid power! Blackcurrants are real vitamin C bombs with 180 mg per 100 grams. Red ones manage 40 mg per 100 grams. Whichever you like, their strong, tart flavor goes perfectly with quark, cakes, parfait, sorbets, as juice or jelly. Blackcurrants are great for compotes, jellies and even delicious blackcurrant liqueur, the «Crème de cassis»!
Gooseberries - far sweeter than their reputation
The cherry-sized gooseberries come in white, green, yellow or red - a real splash of color! Depending on the variety, they are hairy or smooth and super juicy. Their flavor journey is exciting: unripe they are tart, with increasing ripeness they become sour, and the riper, the sweeter! In fact, gooseberries have the highest sugar content of all our native berries, after grapes. A special highlight: they are harvested unripe and small because they ripen after being picked! They contain lots of pectin and various acids that aid digestion. Perfect for compote or cake with meringue! And they're also a hit as a chutney with grilled meat!

Buying - buy little and buy local
When you buy berries, it's best to look for regional fruits! They have shorter transport distances and are as fresh as the morning dew. If possible, buy them directly from the farm – not only is it delicious, but it also supports local farmers! Be sure to only take small quantities and well-ripened fruits. Most berries, except for blueberries and gooseberries, do not ripen after being picked. So, it's better to pick the best ones straight away! When you're transporting them home, the berries should be placed at the top of the shopping basket so that they don't get squashed. And you should avoid cycling; the vibrations are not exactly berry-friendly! Have fun snacking!
Store berries in a cool place
Store in a cool place and wash just before eating
Summer berries are simply delicious! They taste best when they are fresh and should be eaten quickly. The lower part of the refrigerator or the vegetable drawer is ideal for storing them. Raspberries and blackberries stay fresh there for up to two days, while currants and gooseberries last a little longer. Blueberries are the long-distance runners and will keep for up to a week, but they will lose some of their flavor. Place the berries next to each other in a shallow dish or on a plate. Pat off any moisture and sort out any mushy fruits. Covering them with a paper towel is great, but foil is a no-go! Important: don't wash them! This way, the berries retain their natural protective coating and stay fresh for longer. To prevent mold, it's best to place a paper towel under the berries. Enjoy sweet summer moments!
Freeze berries
Freeze berries - quick and easy
Freeze berries? No problem! All varieties are very easy to freeze and stay fresh for several months. Simply wash and dry the fruit well and pre-freeze it on a plate in the freezer for two to three hours. This way the little fruits won't stick together later! If you want to use the berries for smoothies or milkshakes, simply puree them before freezing and then fill the puree into ice cube trays. This way you'll have small portions ready to hand later, which are super easy to remove! Have fun experimenting with your frozen treats!
