Father's Day in Ticino - on March 19

In Ticino and countries with a predominantly Catholic population such as Italy, Father's Day is celebrated on March 19 because this day is dedicated to the patron saint of fathers - St. Joseph. The Spanish and Portuguese even brought this festival to Africa and America, where it is still celebrated on this day in some countries.

Finally, the Orthodox Church also celebrates Father's Day on St. Joseph's Day. However, according to their calendar, it is celebrated on December 26, which is the case in Bulgaria.

If you happen to be in Ticino on Father's Day, you should look for the delicious St. Joseph's doughnuts (Zeppole di San Giuseppe) in the bakery or find out whether the municipality is organizing a «Sagra dei Tortelli». If the latter is the case, the doughnuts are given away during a festive celebration. Speaking of Zeppole di San Giuseppe: they are also common in Italy, after all they originate from Naples. However, they are made differently everywhere. In Tuscany and Umbria, for example, they are baked rice doughnuts flavored with spices and liqueur, in Emilia Romagna they are shortcrust pastries filled with jam or cream and in Molise they are a deep-fried dessert consisting of a delicate puff pastry and a special filling, to name just a few variations.

Of course, flowers are also given for Father's Day in Ticino. Roses are said to be typical because they symbolize endless love, gratitude, and happiness.
