A single father as the reason for US Father's Day
In the USA, the idea of a Father's Day came up again and again. But it was Sonora Smart Dodd from Spokane in Washington state who made the breakthrough. She and her five brothers had been raised by their father alone. To thank him for his selflessness and care, she organized the
movement to honor fathers at her home in 1910.
Later, when she heard a sermon in church about the newly introduced Mother's Day,
she became convinced that fathers also deserved a holiday.
US Father's Day conquers the world
Sonora Smart Dodd recommended to her pastor that he establish an honor day for fathers. And so, on the third Sunday of June in 1910, the first Father's Day was celebrated in Spokane. Although this initially received little attention,
over time it became popular across the country.
Finally, in 1972, President Richard Nixon declared it a permanent holiday. Since then, Father's Day has spread across much
of the world, although the dates vary from country to country.
