Father's Day became known worldwide through the USA

The German Father's Day originated much earlier. But only the US equivalent became known, which in 1972 was made an official holiday.
In the USA the idea of a Father's Day came up again and again. But the breakthrough came with Sonora Smart Dodd from Spokane in Washington State. When she learned at church that a woman named Anna Marie Jarvis of Grafton wanted to institute a Mother's Day, she recommended to her pastor that a similar day be established for fathers.
Sonora had originally proposed June 5 as the date because it was her father's birthday. But since the parish priest did not have enough time to coordinate with the surrounding parishes and to prepare everything, the devotion was postponed to the third Sunday in June.
Thus, the first Father's Day was celebrated in the United States on the third Sunday of June 1910. But many years were to pass before the holiday was formally recognized. It wasn't until 1966 that President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation in honor of the fathers.
And in 1972, Father's Day was declared a permanent national holiday when President Richard Nixon made it official. Since then, it has spread throughout much of the world.
